Serif vs Sans-Serif Typefaces
Know how to balance serif typefaces with sans serif typefaces. Serif texts have small lines edging out of the letters, usually separated as if they were being used for a typewriter or printed works like books. Serif letters are more detailed and easier to recognize because the shapes are distinct. Sans (or without) serif typefaces are less decorative and do not have the small projecting (or serifs). San serif typefaces are much simpler than the serif family because they are modern in style and minimal in form. A general rule of thumb is to use bold sans serif type for headlines and serif type for body text.
Never clutter your words. Justifying and kerning (or adjusting the spaces between your text) works wonders on the human eye. Not only will the body copy be more legible, but also visually appealing. Your goal is to communicate a message as easy as possible to the reader, even if it’s just a matter of proper formatting, breaking up paragraphs, and stating what’s necessary.
Last But Not Least, Be Original
There’s a good reason why Coca Cola’s logo hasn’t changed. There are plenty of trends out there, yet trends don’t last forever. Helvetica, for example, may be the easiest font to follow, but not always the best choice. Do some research on the history of typography or check out your local library for more information. It’s always important to see what your competitors are doing but even more critical for your business to stand out from the crowd.
