The 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi start today and the world is abuzz on who will take home the gold. The design community has been joining the conversation, but with an eye towards the Olympics logo design. Flat logo design has been an emerging trend recently, and this year’s logo follows this trend.
The Sochi 2014 Olympics logo conveys modern design elements that connect with today’s audience. This is the first Olympics logo to include a web site address. The “.ru” is Russia’s web domain and “sochi.ru” is the URL to the official site. Furthermore, the “Sochi” and “2014” text mirror each other, which mimics the diverse typography of Russia’s landscape. The logo is very simple. There are no shadows, strokes and/or gradients present here. Only one color is used—a deep, modern blue. The typeface is unique to itself with rounded edges and other shapes.
Prior to the official logo, however, the design had some depth. There originally was a blue outline around a lighter blue text. The Sochi Organizing Committee decided to flatten the design further by using only one single color. The blue outline filled the entire text to use only one color.
Even though this is a very flat logo, it still represents current design trends that follow modern and basic design elements.
